Russian police have arrested 60 people after an angry antisemitic mob stormed an airport in the southern city of Makhachkala on Monday, some waving Palestinian flags and searching for Jews among passengers on a flight from Tel Aviv on Sunday.

Police in Dagestan, a restive, mostly Muslim area in the North Caucasus Mountains, said on Monday they had identified 150 of the rioters, who broke into the airport and ran on to the runway after rumours spread that refugees from the Israeli-Palestinian conflict were being relocated to the region.

Sergei Melikhov, Dagestan’s governor, blamed the violence on “our enemies”, including Ukraine, and said the riot was “a stab in the back to our soldiers who are defending all our country” in Ukraine.
