Trump blasts Emmer as Republicans’ House speaker pick: ‘Tragic mistake!’

Former President Donald Trump on Tuesday blasted House Republicans’ new pick for speaker, Rep. Tom Emmer, just a day after saying he would try to stay out of the contest that’s kept the House in limbo for three weeks.

“Voting for a Globalist RINO like Tom Emmer would be a tragic mistake!” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform, using the shorthand for “Republican in name only.”

Emmer, a Minnesota Republican, had just hours earlier won the House GOP’s nod to be its speaker candidate. But it’s unclear if he can win a majority of votes in a House floor vote, which has not yet been scheduled.

Trump had previously thrown his backing behind Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio, whose fellow Republicans revoked their support on Friday after he failed to win on the House floor.

Emmer voted to certify the 2020 election results, which Trump has falsely claimed were rigged. The Minnesota congressman is also a noted cryptocurrency

Trump and Emmer reportedly spoke Saturday, but that conversation apparently didn’t sway the former president.

“I believe he has now learned his lesson, because he is saying that he is Pro-Trump all the way, but who can ever be sure?” Trump wrote.
